The death toll from the Marburg virus has increased
Health Ministry Implements Strict Measures to Contain the Outbreak
The Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda has escalated, with the Ministry of Health announcing on September 29 that the death toll has reached eight, following the recent deaths of two individuals from high fever associated with the virus. While the increase in fatalities is alarming, health officials reported no new infections, maintaining the total number of confirmed cases at 26, with 18 patients currently receiving treatment.
In response to the growing crisis, the Ministry of Health has instituted stringent measures aimed at preventing further transmission of the virus. Among these is a prohibition on traditional farewell ceremonies for the deceased, which are now required to take place at designated hospitals. Only specific individuals will be permitted to attend these ceremonies, which are restricted to no more than 50 people. This approach aims to minimize mass gatherings that could facilitate the spread of the virus to family members and healthcare workers.
To address overcrowding in medical facilities during this critical period, all patient visits to clinics have been postponed for 14 days, with provisions allowing only one designated visitor per patient. Clinics are mandated to establish special protocols for handling patients exhibiting symptoms consistent with Marburg, employing the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures as outlined by health authorities.
The Ministry of Health has urged Rwandans to continue their daily activities but emphasizes the importance of maintaining high hygiene standards. Citizens are encouraged to wash their hands regularly with soap and clean water and to avoid close contact with individuals displaying symptoms of the virus.
The Marburg virus is a severe and often fatal illness that presents with a range of symptoms, including high fever, severe headaches, muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting. As the situation develops, public health officials remain vigilant in their efforts to contain the virus and protect the health and safety of the Rwandan population.
In these challenging times, cooperation from the community is essential. The Ministry of Health continues to provide updates and guidance, urging everyone to adhere strictly to the health protocols in place.
