Senators advocate for improved roads to boost dairy sector in Gishwati-Mukura area
Senators have raised concerns about the poor road infrastructure near Gishwati-Mukura National Park, particularly in Rutsiro District, which has severely impacted the livelihoods of local communities.
Farmers reportedly lose over RWF 270 million monthly due to difficulties in delivering milk to markets.
The region is renowned for its high milk production, yet only 30% of the milk transported reaches its destination. The poor roads not only hinder the dairy sector but also obstruct other economic activities.
During a Senate session on November 27, 2024, while reviewing the appointment of Ntibitura Jean Bosco as the Governor of the Western Province, Senators highlighted the urgency of addressing these infrastructure challenges. They urged the new governor to prioritize fixing the roads, emphasizing their critical role in economic development.
Senator Evode Uwizeyimana remarked, “The Western Province, with its proximity to Lake Kivu and its remarkable investments in tourism, should not be held back by poor road access. The state of the roads here is unacceptable.” He recounted a recent visit to the area, where they witnessed farmers struggling to push a truck loaded with milk, reflecting the enormous losses farmers face.
The Senate’s Political and Governance Commission Chairperson, Dr. Kaitesi Usta, echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for leadership to address the pressing issues in the region. She noted that poor service delivery had been flagged in a recent RGB survey, with all seven districts in the province showing regression.
Governor Ntibitura acknowledged the challenges, attributing them to a lack of proactive leadership. He assured Senators of his commitment to resolving the road crisis and leveraging the region’s potential, particularly in agriculture.
The newly inaugurated milk powder plant in Nyagatare has sparked optimism among farmers, who believe it will provide a reliable market for their milk. However, they insist that improving road networks in Rutsiro, Ngororero, and other key dairy-producing areas is essential for sustained growth and profitability.
The Western Province accounts for 69% of Rwanda’s total milk production, making it a vital contributor to the national economy. However, without functional roads, the region’s full potential remains untapped.
