RDF Dismisses Senior Officers Amid Corruption Crackdown
Kigali, August 30, 2024 – In a decisive move to enforce discipline and integrity within the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), President Paul Kagame, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief, has dismissed Major General Martin Nzaramba, Colonel Dr. Etienne Uwimana, and 19 other officers from their positions. This action, part of a broader crackdown on corruption and mismanagement, also includes the rescission of contracts for 195 other ranks within the RDF.
The dismissal of Maj Gen Nzaramba is particularly noteworthy. He was removed from his post due to allegations of corruption and mismanagement of funds while overseeing the Nasho Basic Military Training Centre. This marks a clear stance by President Kagame against any form of misconduct within the RDF, reinforcing the message that even the highest-ranking officers are not above the law.
The crackdown on corruption was preceded by a high-level meeting on August 29, where President Kagame met with RDF generals and senior officers to discuss the country’s peace and security priorities. Following this meeting, the swift action taken against those involved in corrupt practices underscores the RDF’s commitment to maintaining a disciplined and accountable force.
Gatete Nyiringabo Ruhumuliza, a well-known Rwandan commentator, highlighted the severity of these measures, remarking, “I’ve never seen a more fearsome meeting! Whenever it happens, I know ‘generals’ heads are going to roll.’ Many are reprimanded, others fired!” His comments reflect the rigorous standards expected within the RDF and the serious consequences of failing to meet them.
This move not only addresses corruption but also aims to strengthen the RDF’s reputation as a disciplined and efficient military force. By holding officers accountable for their actions, President Kagame is ensuring that the RDF remains a model of integrity and professionalism, both in Rwanda and on the international stage.
The RDF’s reputation for excellence in both combat readiness and discipline is central to Rwanda’s national security. This latest action reinforces the core values of the RDF, signaling to all ranks that corruption and mismanagement will not be tolerated.
I’ve never seen a most fearsome meeting! Whenever it happens, I know “generals heads are going to roll.” Many are reprimanded, others fired!
If anyone wants to learn how to keep an army at the cutting-edge, of combat and discipline, they should sit with President Kagame! https://t.co/AkyqL33ZJe
